Community Care Initiative: Sponsorship for Essential Surgery

Ms Poonam a 14 year old girl was brought to CMC with complains of left ear pus discharge since 2 years of age, when patient was examined she was found to have erosion in the bones of left ear which is termed as Chronic otitis media - squamous disease. Similar disease seen on the right ear but less severe in intensity which could be kept on regular follow up.  This disease is known to cause the bony erosion which leads to reduced hearing, it can erode the bone over the facial nerve because of which we can have normal facial features on smiling and talking.  It can also erode the thin bone between the ear and the brain leading to serious complications of the disease like meningitis, brain abscess and seizure which can be life threatening. 

This girl was advised for surgery but due to financial constraints they were not able to get the surgery done. Patient was living with her grandparents as parents were not able to provide for all the children.  Parents and other 2 brothers and 1 sister live in U. P. Where as she is living with grandparents in Ludhiana.  

Father is a daily wage worker trying to make the ends meet and doing the best to educate all the children. 

While we were trying to think how to help this child out we came to know regarding the Vardaman group who were willing to help out needy patients. We contacted them and they were prompt to respond and were able to provide with generous donation because of which surgery of this child could be planned. 

Poonam underwent left sided Modified radical mastoidectomy with cartilage Tympanoplasty on 11.11.19. 

During surgery the bony canal over the facial nerve was eroded and the bone separating the brain and ear had become paper thin. We would like to thank the Vardhman group for the generous support for timely treatment of this child.  
She is doing well after surgery.
